Originally from Pennsylvania, Janocko was drafted at age 19 and served about in the US Army for three years, from 1943 - 1946.  His overseas tour was in the Pacific Theater of WWII with the 11^th Airborne Division, “The Angels,” specifically in battles and campaigns in New Guinea, the South Philippines and Luzon, and later in the occupation of Japan in Okinawa. Janocko would fly with a pilot in a tiny piper cub airplane to the front lines of battle and drop supplies to the troops on resupply runs.
